The Fourth Man
Daniel 3 tells an amazing story of perseverance and faithfulness to principle. Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego (cue the Bestie Boys song!) seem so matter of fact and level headed in facing the king's wrath and the prospect of a very unpleasant death. With epic faith (atheists would call delusion?), they were prepared to face the consequences – even if God didn't rescue them. If only I had such faith.
And of course, the most mysterious part of the story is the Fourth Man. Nebuchadnezzar (which is so much fun to say) assumes he'll witness three corpses evaporating in the flames. But instead he sees three men walking about in the furnace, joined by another that "looks like a son of the gods." Who was that, do you think?
I'm sure those of an orthodox Jewish persuasion might resent the Christian inclination to consider this Fourth Man Jesus – and I get it. It's certainly possible that it was an angel of some sort. Daniel doesn't clarify. But it sure is . . . tempting.
