The empty tomb described in John 20:1-18 is the epicenter – Ground Zero – of Christianity. Two thousand years ago, it ignited a shock wave across history that still reverberates. Even when one concedes that this event occurred in antiquity and is difficult to verify, it's still telling that the Sanhedrin never managed to squelch the rumors by simply producing a body. They certainly had every incentive to do so.
And the idea that the disciples stole the body and hid it away simply doesn't compute. There was a guard posted on the night in question. In addition, all but one of disciples suffered horrific deaths maintaining that the Resurrection was a fact. You don't willingly suffer on that scale for a lie.
I've wondered why this event has not been more prominently symbolized in Christian history. The Protestants insist on an empty cross (as opposed to the Catholic crucifix) to emphasize the resurrection ("He is not here!"). Perhaps something like this design might be another option.
