I've often agonized at the thought of what Jesus endured at his crucifixion. Roman nails were not the demure, rounded steel variety that we have today. They were more often monstrous spikes wrought of iron, ranging from 7-9 inches length with square edges. In reality, they were likely driven through the wrist as opposed to a victim's palm, but tradition's visuals are difficult to shake.
Either way, it must have been devastating to any tissue. Evidently, centurions had to be precise, as a misplacement would pierce key arteries or crack the arm's radius or ulna - hastening death. Crucifixion was slow by design.
