H2O To Vino
I once saw a lecture given by none other that Tony Campolo, a renown – if not controversial – evangelist whose popularity seemed to peak in the 90's. In it, he pointed out that Jesus's first recorded miracle of changing water to wine in John 2:1-12 was unusual in the context of the ones that would follow. It was not driven by some sort of health crisis, hunger or economic need, but was instead a response to his mother's prodding to come to the aid of her friends. The miracle of changing water to wine primarily rescued the wedding hosts from embarrassment and an incredibly awkward faux-pas.
In my mind's eye, the scene translated to modern setting, of elegant wine glasses ushered about on a white-gloved waiter's silver platter.
