Angels are such mysterious creatures. Details on their physical appearance are few and far between, but in the Old Testament they're positively otherworldly.
I'm always struck by how angels always seem to reassure their human audience to "not be afraid" as the first order of business. This contrasts the cherubic portrayal they often have in classical art, with gentle feminine features and pristine, downy wings. In reality, I get the impression that they could be terrifying. At the very least, Luke 1:30 implies that Mary had to be unsettled at Gabriel's Annunciation visit.
There's a great episode in C.S. Lewis's book, Perelandra, where two archangels discuss how best to appear to flesh bound creatures in a way that won't completely freak them out.
Hence, this 100% cotton Christian t-shirt's illustration – inspired by Isaiah's description of the seraphim attending God's throne room.
