5000 For Dinner
I love the feeding of the 5,000 depicted by the Gospels - in this case, Matthew 14:13-21. As was so often the case, Jesus was driven to act out of his compassion and sympathy for people hungry for hope (among other things). I also love how he toys with the disciples: "YOU give them something to eat."
And the mystery in how it worked! Scripture is so stingy with the details. He just handed them the five loaves and fish to pass out, and then somehow – at some point – it became enough to feed thousands of people. It feels like some kind of slight-of-hand that happened right in front of your face on a massive scale. I really wish I could have seen it.
Anyway, the strangely specific count of FIVE loaves and TWO fish plays well into a visual composition, and reminds us of how Jesus is concerned with even our most mundane needs. Next time you're hungry, wear this 100% cotton Christian t-shirt.
